Prophet Muhammad and Grief Part 1

Losing a loved one can sometimes seem like the end of the world. Subhan Allah, it hits and it hits hard. You may experience The Five Stages of Grief at first and some stages might extend for longer than you're expecting.

I wanted to give some stories about Prophet Muhammad (صَلّى االلهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم) and the grief he experienced in his life time. This is not to minimize your grief or to compare and contrast. Rather, these stories are meant to provide motivation and encouragement to help you process your grief a little easier.

The Prophet Muhammad (صَلّى االلهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم) became an orphan before he was born. His father passed away, while the Prophet (صَلّى االلهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم) was still in his mother's womb. The Prophet (صَلّى االلهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم) then lost his mother when he was merely six years old. His mother's name was Amina bint Wahab.

The Prophet (صَلّى االلهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم) is only human and has emotions as we all do. It was reported that once while he was traveling from Mecca to Madinah, he passed by the village of Abwa, where his mother was buried. He sat next to a grave and started to cry. The Shabah all started to cry when they saw him, but they didn't know why he was crying. When they asked him, he told them it was his mother's grave and he missed her.

After the Prophet's (صَلّى االلهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم) mother passed away, his grandfather, who was his guardian, soon followed. When he was eight years old, his grandfather Abdul Muttalib was old and getting more sick. Realizing that he was going to depart this world, Abdul Muttalib looked at his sons to see who would be the best and most suitable guardian for Prophet (صَلّى االلهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم). He came to the decision that his son, Abu Talib would be the best guardian for Prophet (صَلّى االلهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم) Muhammad. Although Abu Talib never accepted Islam, he was known as a compassionate and merciful man. He vowed to guard and protect Prophet Muhammad (صَلّى االلهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم).

So by the time the Prophet (صَلّى االلهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم) was eight years old, he had lost his father, mother, and his grandfather.

The loses that Prophet Muhammad (صَلّى االلهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم) experienced in his life time are a lot. Thus, I decided to make this into a few parts so that each post is not overwhelming with information.

Surat Al Duha references Prophet Muhammad's orphanage.
